Here at Heal with Harry, we help both adults and children build their confidence around dogs and to learn about canine body language through 1-1 therapy sessions with our registered therapy dog, Harry. We understand that the level of fear varies from person-to-person, so we create bespoke programmes designed with your needs in mind.
During our 45 minute initial consultation, we will discuss you or your child's level of fear, try to identify the specific situations that you or your child find the most stressful, and consider how the fear began. We will also ask you to fill in a questionnaire to help us understand your phobia further, and answer any questions you may have about the therapy.
After your consultation, we will create a bespoke programme designed to help you feel confident around dogs, and how to interact with them through understanding canine body language.
How you will first meet Harry will vary depending on your bespoke programme. If it has been determined that your fear is 'mild', we will initially introduce you to Harry by going on a walk together in a large, safe space. We are happy for you to bring someone with you if it makes you feel calmer.
However, if it has been determined that your fear is 'moderate' or 'high', you will not meet Harry face-to-face until we know that you are ready to do so. Instead, as a way for you to get to know him, your initial sessions will involve talking about Harry and observing photographs and videos of him. We would then slowly introduce you to Harry in person, as instructed by your bespoke programme.
As each programme is bespoke, the amount of therapy sessions required will vary from person to person, and will entail different activities to help you overcome your fear. This may include:
- Going on a walk with Harry
- Observing and discussing canine body language
- The use of cognitive behavioural therapy techniques
We will always work at your pace, and can adjust the programme to your needs as you go on this healing journey.
